Details

Activated carbon in pelletized form, typical size 4-5mm diameter and 6-7mm long.  Derived from bituminous coal, its high activity and extreme surface area (due to the activation manufacturing process) make it ideal for marine aquarium filtration applications.

For filters, it’s generally accepted that carbon made from bituminous coal is far and away much superior. In fact, it’s the first choice for human drinking water purifiers the world over. Our Coral Essentials Activated Carbon is made purely from Bituminous coal and far superior to all other carbon.

Our activated carbon is excellent at removing organic chemicals from the water. The two chemicals that carbon excels at pulling from tanks are phenols and tannins. These are produced from a variety of sources, including the metabolic waste of fish and coral, the breakdown and decomposition of faeces, plants and uneaten food, and many more. It is also excellent at the removal of chlorine, chloramine and some heavy metals.

Zeolite can absorb ammonia and other nitrogenous compounds and when used appropriately can quickly help reduce phosphate and nitrate in marine aquarium systems. It also has a micro-porous structure which makes it a very suitable environment for anaerobic bacteria.  It is best used in a reactor, or can be used in filter bags in the sump as close as possible to the return outlet.  Perfect for those looking to remove unwanted aquarium water elements and lower system nutrients in any marine aquarium or those wanting to maintain an ULNS (Ultra Low Nutrient System).

Q: What does the carbon do?

A: Activated carbon helps remove dissolved organics, yellowing compounds, odours, and other impurities that can reduce water clarity.

Q: What does the zeolite do?

A: Zeolite is commonly used to help adsorb ammonia and support better water quality, especially in systems with high nutrient loads or during early setup stages.

Q: Is this suitable for reef aquariums?

A: Yes, it is suitable for marine and reef aquariums when used correctly as part of a balanced filtration system.

Q: Can I use it in freshwater aquariums?

A: Yes, it can also be used in freshwater systems where improved water clarity and filtration support are desired.

Q: Where should I place Carbon & Zeolite?

A: It is best used in a media bag, canister filter, sump, or reactor where water can flow through the media efficiently.

Q: How often should I replace it?

A: Replacement frequency depends on tank load and water conditions, but many aquarists replace filtration media every few weeks to maintain effectiveness.

Q: Will it make my water clearer?

A: Yes, activated carbon is well known for improving water clarity and removing yellow tint caused by dissolved organics.

Q: Is it safe for fish, corals, and invertebrates?
